Dioctyl phthalate is an organic compound.It is the phthalate ester of the alcohol 2-ethyl hexanol, which is normally manufactured by the dimerisation of butyraldehyde, the butyraldehyde itself being synthesised from propylene.It is produced by the esterfication of phthalic anhydride with 2-ethyl-hexanol.
Applications:
It has been used as a plasticiser in medical devices such as intravenous tubing and bags, catheters, nasogastric tubes, dialysis bags and tubing, and blood bags and transfusion tubing, vinyl upholstery, tablecloth, shower, curtain, raincoat, shoes,garden hoses, swimming pools liners, polymeric coating, cable coating, component of paper and paperboard, defoaming agents, surface lubricants and air tubes.It is also used in vacuum pumps.
